Implosion: Old airport hotel set to be demolished Sunday morning

ATLANTA — A former hotel outside the Atlanta airport will be coming down Sunday morning.

Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport said the Department of Aviation plans to implode the 14-story tower of the former Sheraton Hotel, located at 1900 Sullivan Road, on Sunday.

The tower is set to implode around 7:30 a.m., barring any weather or technical delays.

The remaining components of the former hotel and conference center will be demolished through more traditional means by November 2021.

As part of the demolition, several roads will be at least partially closed off on Sunday. A full list of the road’s affected may be viewed below. All roads are expected to be fully reopened at approximately 11:30 a.m.

  • Airport Blvd at Riverdale Road
  • Sullivan Road at Riverdale Road
  • Sullivan Road at Massachusetts Blvd
  • Riverdale Road will remain open, but flaggers will be placed along the road to provide visibility to passing motorists.
