DC plane-helicopter collision: Few flights from Hartsfield-Jackson to Reagan National canceled

ATLANTA — Officials have shut down Ronald Reagan National Airport until 11 a.m. Thursday after an American Airlines passenger jet and Army helicopter collided over the Potomac River in Washington D.C. on Wednesday night.

Flights in and out of the airport have been canceled or significantly delayed. FlightAware’s tracking website currently shows at least 500 flights at Reagan National have been canceled for Thursday.

A few flights from Atlanta to Washington, D.C. have been canceled.

Channel 2′s Darryn Moore is at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport. So far, Moore spotted at least two American Airlines flights and one Southwest Airlines flight cancellations on the departures board:

  • American Airlines AA 3595, Washington-DCA, 05:43 AM Canceled
  • American Airlines AA 5412, Washington-DCA, 10:09 AM Canceled
  • Southwest Airlines WN 2583, Washington-DCA, 07:05 Canceled

In Washington, D.C., the search operations have been underway since 9 p.m. Wednesday after an American Airlines passenger jet collided midair with an Army helicopter.

The plane went down in the Potomac River as it approached the airport. It left Wichita, Kansas with 60 passengers and four crew members on board. U.S. Figure Skating confirmed that several of their skaters and coaches were on board. They were returning from a development camp held after the U.S. Figure Skating Championships in Wichita.

At a news conference Thursday, DC fire chief said he believes there are no survivors in the crash and the search-and-rescue is now a recovery mission.
