Deadly Walmart crash: Customers stopped driver who tried to run from the scene, GSP says

THOMASVILLE, Ga. — New details have been released by Georgia State Patrol after a car plowed into a south Georgia Walmart.

The crash happened around 11:45 a.m. at store on U.S. 19 in Thomasville, Georgia and left one man dead and a woman injured. GSP investigators have identified the suspect as Khalil Pugh.

Witnesses at the scene reported that Pugh was driving recklessly and at high speeds in a Toyota Camry in the parking lot. Pugh then drove the car into the Walmart’s entrance and hit several people, according to investigators.

Pugh tried to run from the scene, but troopers say several bystanders at the Walmart stopped him from escaping.

Officials took Pugh to a local hospital. He will be charged with vehicular homicide in 1st degree, reckless driving, leaving the scene of an accident and driving without a license.

GSP identified the man who died in the crash as Kenneth Kennedy of Monticello, Florida and the woman who was injured as Erica Lee.

Walmart has issued a statement, writing:

“We’re heartbroken to learn what has happened, and our sympathies go out to everyone affected. We’ll continue working closely with local law enforcement as they investigate this incident.”
