DEKALB COUNTY, Ga. — Two 14-year-old students have been charged after a gun was found at a middle school.

School officials said an “inoperable shotgun” was found Tuesday in the ceiling tile of the boy’s bathroom at Lithonia Middle School.

Officials said no students or staff were in danger at any time.

Channel 2's Nicole Carr asked parents if they felt better knowing the shotgun did not work.

"No, cause what is a 12- or 13- or 11- or 14-year-old child doing with a shotgun, a gun, any type of weapon at all? Not only at school, but anywhere?" Gloria Smith said.

A district spokesperson said the discovery was made when a student alerted an administrator.

"You see it on the news all the time, but you never think it may be at your school your child goes to," Smith said.

The school system said the students did not plan to hurt anyone.

"It really makes you wonder what's happening at schools now. That's serious," Smith said.

A father of a child at the school told Carr he wanted more information from the school than a letter sent home.

The teens charged went to juvenile court Wednesday.
