Backpacks not allowed at metro high school after student brings gun to school

DEKALB COUNTY, Ga. — DeKalb County school officials say a student brought a gun to McNair High School and now backpacks are outlawed on the campus.

McNair High School went into lockdown Wednesday after a threat was made to the school that turned out to be false.

The school is still undergoing policy changes after a student brought a gun to school last week.

The biggest of those changes involves now requiring all students to carry their books to class with them.

“They told us don’t bring anymore book bags,” said student Lynn Walker.

District officials released a statement to Channel 2′s Audrey Washington that reiterated the safety and well-being of its students is its top priority. The statement read, in part,

“McNair High School implemented a new book bag policy, which went into effect on Aug. 16, to ensure a safe environment for all students and staff. No book bags will be allowed at school. There is a small bag allowance for students who need to carry personal/emergency items.”

District officials did not comment on why the student brought a gun to school or what disciplinary actions were taken against that student.

The new backpack policy will remain in place at least through the end of the school year.
