DEKALB COUNTY, Ga. — A chase that spanned several counties ended in a dramatic crash in DeKalb County early Thursday morning.

Channel 2's Steve Gehlbach said police had blocked off the area along Covington Highway and Hanes Drive for about an hour, but it reopened around 6 a.m.

Gehlbach learned that the chase began in Rockdale County when police said the suspect fired a shot at his girlfriend. Officers from Newton, Rockdale and DeKalb counties were involved in the chase.

We're working to learn more about the suspect's past, on Channel 2 Action News starting at 4 p.m.

The 30-mile chase finally ended when police said an officer performed a PIT maneuver on the white Ford Edge. But police said he still wouldn’t give up -- he tried getting away by ramming at least three police cars.

During the attempt to get away, that’s when police say one officer fired a shot. No one was hit.

The suspect was eventually taken into custody.
