Child who slipped, fell in the street run over by school bus in DeKalb County, police say

DECATUR, Ga. — A child was run over by a school bus on Wednesday morning, DeKalb police confirmed to Channel 2 Action News.

At around 7 a.m., police arrived at a bus stop located on Brown Drive and Brookside Parkway after a child who was running in the street slipped and fell.

Police say the child was late and trying to get on the bus before it left the stop.

Channel 2′s Tom Regan was in DeKalb County, where some neighbors were woken up to the sound of an ambulance, firetrucks and police, along with kids yelling.

“It’s very sad, yeah yeah,” neighbor Curtis Mckeithon said. “It was so dark. I can see how the driver, he probably didn’t know he hit him.”

Police said the bus driver did not see the boy and ran over his leg. The bus driver stayed on the scene until medical officials were able to transport the boy to the hospital.

The child is stable, police said.

DeKalb County Schools said the victim was a student from Bob Mathis Elementary School. The boy road to the hospital with a parent, according to the school district.

The accident remains under investigation.
