DEKALB COUNTY, Ga — A metro Atlanta boxing gym is giving teens an alternative to getting in trouble on the streets.
Channel 2′s Larry Spruill visited Mustafa’s Boxing Gym in Decatur to see how they are making an impact on kids’ lives.
One boxer, 14-year-old Kevonta James, says the gym is family.
“The gym here, I mean, every time you walk in, you feel like family no matter what,” James said. “Without them, I don’t know where I’d be. I’d probably be out in the streets doing something bad.”

Aside from boxing skills and techniques, students are mentored with life lessons on masculinity and how to conduct themselves.
The gym is proud of what it has done to teach young men conflict resolution without the use of violence.

Mustafa Meekins, who owns the gym, says he encourages parents to send their kids to him at night time instead of letting them get into trouble.
“Friday nights, Saturday nights bring them in....I’d rather them be in here than out there,” Meekins said.
