DeKalb County church to hold free gas giveaway Saturday

DECATUR, Ga. — Gas prices are on the rise and their impact is adding to pressures families are already facing thanks to inflation.

While gas and oil prices have fluctuated, the recent increases after a few weeks of lower costs have put a sour taste in consumers’ mouths.

Caroline Satcher says she had hoped we were all done with this.

“It’s very tough.  I’ve noticed that it’s going up.  I was scared it was going up to at least 4 dollars,” Satcher said.

She’s talking about the price of a gallon of gasoline.

Satcher buys hers at an Exxon along Covington Highway in Decatur, but it’s higher everywhere.

The recent spike has caused Pastor Dwight Buckner, Jr. to take action.

“One thing this community needs—particularly in Decatur along Covington Highway—is food,” Buckner said.

The pastor says the way to help people afford groceries is to fill their tanks with gas.

Buckner leads the congregation at Generation of Hope Church, just up the street from Exxon.

On Saturday starting at 9 a.m., half of the Exxon station’s pumps will be used for a gasoline giveaway.

Buckner calls it “Gas on God.”

“So we’re pretty much saying when you pull up, God is paying for your gas,” the pastor said.

The church, local attorney Justin Miller, and local investment firm executive Xavier Peoples teamed up to cover the cost.

They’ll be giving away $8,000 worth of fuel until their funds run out of gas.

Pastor Buckner says he’ll also be sharing the gospel.

Satcher says she’s grateful for both.

“It hits me deeply in the heart.  I love it,” Satchner said. 

The “Gas on God” event starts at 9 a.m. at the Exxon at 4847 Covington Highway in Decatur on Saturday. 

Buckner says police will be there to direct traffic.
