DEKALB COUNTY, Ga. — A local deputy fire chief accused of raping an unconscious woman after a night of drinking has been placed on paid administrative leave in light of the charges.

According to police, Morrow Deputy Fire Chief Herb Jones is facing a felony rape charge in connection with the alleged March 29 incident in Decatur.

Decatur police say Jones met a man and two women at a bar, and they decided to go back to the Icehouse Lofts after the bar closed to drink more.

The man and woman say they woke up and found Jones assaulting their friend, who apparently had too much to drink and was unconscious, police said.

They called police and Jones was arrested.

Jones told police he drank until he fell asleep and then when he woke up, he couldn’t remember what happened.

Mayor Jeff Detar told Channel 2 Action News that he supports his employees. He said he can’t comment on the charges against Jones because he didn’t want to get in the way of the investigation.

Jones’ neighbor said he doesn’t think he would harm anyone.

“He help me. He help me all the time,” Jose Ramirez said.

Ramirez said Jones is a good man who’s always willing to lend a helping hand.

“He’s a good neighbor,” Ramirez said. “My daughter tell you, my son tell you. We are friends.”

Jones is out on $25,000 bond.
