How to get around the I-20 road buckling

DeKALB COUNTY, Ga. — Several lanes of Interstate 20 Westbound between Candler and Gresham Roads are closed because of buckling in the road.

All lanes were closed most of the day Monday, but GDOT was able to reopen two of them around 4:30 p.m.

The agency says drivers should not expect all lanes to be open until at least noon on Tuesday.

Motorists are urged to seek alternative routes until further notice.

Traffic is being diverted from I-20 Westbound at I-285 to either I-285 North or I-285 South.

  • Covington Highway Westbound, to Memorial Drive Westbound, to South Howard Street Southbound, to Glenwood Road Westbound, to I-20 Westbound

I-20 westbound entrance ramps inside the Perimeter at Columbia Drive, Candler Road and Flat Shoals Road are closed.

The DeKalb County Police and Fire Rescue departments are on the scene, as well as the Georgia Department of Transportation.

GDOT said the road buckle is "likely due to an issue with an underground utility instillation. Inspectors are assessing the situation and crews are prepared to work quickly to repair the interstate."

The incident was not caused by and did not involve the release of natural gas, authorities said.
