Metro police chief honored as state’s ‘Outstanding Police Chief of the Year’

DUNWOODY, Ga. — At the Georgia Association of Chiefs of Police gathering in Savannah, Dunwoody Chief Billy Grogan was named the Outstanding Chief of the Year for 2023.

The GACP awarded Grogan with the title due to his proactive contributions to the Dunwoody Police Department, the GACP, and the Georgia state law enforcement community.

Grogan has served in law enforcement for more than 41 years.

A release about the chief’s award from the Dunwoody Police Department said he first began his service career in 1981 as part of the Marietta Police Department.

While serving in Marietta, he rose to the rank of Deputy Chief.

When the City of Dunwoody was formed in 2008, he was named Chief of Police of the new city’s police department, a position he’s held ever since.

Grogan’s career included multiple degrees related to law enforcement, political science and nationally accredited training programs.

The Dunwoody police chief holds a Bachelor’s degree in Political Science and a Master of Public Administration from Kennesaw State University, as well as being a graduate of the FBI National Academy, Georgia Law Enforcement Command College, the Georgia-International Law Enforcement Exchange (GILEE), and the Senior Management Institute for Police (SMIP) at the Police Executive Research Forum (PERF).

“I appreciate this honor very much. I’ve been working in this field for 41 years, and I’ve enjoyed every single minute of it. But I would not be here without the folks I’ve worked with throughout my career in Marietta and Dunwoody,” Chief Grogan said, accepting the award in Savannah. “I want to thank my wife and family for their support. They’ve always been there for me.”

Grogan was honored by an organization where he’s also served in leadership roles.

From 2016 to 2017, Grogan was the 52nd President of GACP. Currently, Grogan is co-chair on the GACP’s Legislative Committee, and a member of its Alarm Management and State Certification Committees.
