Guns, drugs, nearly 40 fugitives off the street following multi-agency operation across metro

DEKALB COUNTY, Ga. — A large amount of guns and drugs are now off the streets thanks, in part, to Operation Safe Summer.

Deputies from several agencies rounded up the fugitives over a 48-hour period.

Investigators told Channel 2′s Audrey Washington that the goal was to show up with no warning and capture as many fugitives as possible.

“It’s another day in the county of keeping our community safe,” DeKalb County Sheriff Melody Maddox said.

The multiagency effort involving the U.S. Marshals Service and the DeKalb, Fulton, Henry and Newton County sheriffs offices, took approximately 40 suspects off the streets.

Randy Akies, chief deputy for the DeKalb County Sheriff’s Office, listed some of the offenses covered in the arrest warrants: “Armed robbery, aggravated assault aggravated sexual battery—there were a couple of homicide by vehicle, burglary, aggravated stalking.”

Washington tagged along with sheriff deputies Wednesday as they went from home to home, searching for fugitives.

She was with deputies as they arrested a man on an outstanding drug warrant. On Tuesday they arrested another man after investigators found 50 pounds of marijuana, and AR-15 gun and a Glock, as well as cash and fraudulent checks.

During the operation, there were some fugitives who deputies could not find.

Washington asked Akies about what happens with those individuals.

“Those warrants still stand, but our motto is we rather for you to turn yourself in versus we having to go out and look for you,” Akies said.

He said the operation was such a success that he plans to hold another in the near future.

All those arrested remain in jail at this time.
