On Jan 9., Danny John Marillo Hunter, 34, was found guilty of involuntary manslaughter, felony murder, two counts of aggravated assault and two counts of possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony. He was sentenced to life in prison.
The conviction stems from the death of 40-year-old Kateasha Cardell and the assault of her fiancé 48-year-old Karlo Dupree that occurred on September 22, 2021.

The investigation revealed that just after 4 p.m., DeKalb County police were called to a person shot in front of a home on Dove Valley Road in incorporated Decatur.
When officers arrived, they found Cardell lying in the middle of the road with a gunshot wound to the back of her back. She was taken to Atlanta Medical Center, where she later died.
Hunter was arrested at the scene. According to the DeKalb County District Attorney’s Office, Hunter made multiple statements about the shooting claiming the victims, who rented a home from his father, had made threats against them.
When detectives later interviewed Dupree, he explained that he and Cardell had been in an ongoing dispute with their landlord, Hunter’s father.
The DA said the couple reported that their landlord had shut off their utilities to make them leave the property. Officials said Cardell also noticed some inconsistencies while reviewing her bank account and believed their landlord was responsible.

According to the DA, the couple went to their landlord’s home to speak to him about the unusual charges.
While talking to Hunter and his father in front of the home, the DA said Hunter went inside the house and grabbed a revolver. DeKalb County officials said, the 34-year-old then came back outside and shot Cardell.
Dupree jumped into his car to leave and Hunter then fired a shot at him, the DA said. Dupree drove to the DeKalb County Jail to get help from police.
The DA said, Hunter claimed he wanted to protect his father from the couple but investigators did not find that either of them were armed at the time of the shooting.
