Off-duty DeKalb police officer hit by heavy cable equipment while directing traffic

DEKALB COUNTY, Ga. — A DeKalb County police officer was rushed to the hospital after he was hit by a power line Friday morning while directing traffic in Doraville.

The incident happened at the intersection of I-285 and Peachtree Industrial Boulevard.

Channel 2′s Brian Mims was at the scene, where police said utility crews were working to repair a traffic signal nearby when a power line snapped. The line then hit the officer in the head.

DeKalb Police later clarified that the officer was hit by “large cable equipment” and was not seriously injured.

A witness at the scene said a truck hit and dragged the power line after it snapped and the wire then hit the officer.

Police said the Dekalb County officer was working a side job when the accident happened.

The officer, who has not been identified, was taken to Grady Memorial Hospital. His condition has not been released but DeKalb police said he is resting.
