Police: Man kills estranged wife, self in former Stone Mountain home

DEKALB COUNTY, Ga. — Police are investigating a murder-suicide that happened in Stone Mountain Tuesday morning.

DeKalb County police said they responded to a shots fired call at a house on Wetherborn Place just after midnight and found a man and woman shot inside.

Police said 34-year-old Clifford Elston shot and killed his estranged wife, 35-year-old Shayla Sullivan Elston in the garage of the house. %

"All appearances at this stage are indicating this is going to be a murder-suicide," DeKalb County police Lt. Mark Lavigne said.

Police said Elston also shot his mother-in-law in the foot before turning the gun on himself. The woman’s mother was taken to an area hospital where she is recovering.

“The couple that lives at this location this morning, was going through a separation. The male had previously left the residence. He was to return last night to pick up some belongings. But when he arrived last night, he began shooting,” DeKalb County police Maj. S.R. Fore said.

Two children, ages 12 and 14, were also in the house when it happened. They were in another room during the shooting and did not witness it, according to police.

Investigators said the children are now in the care of family members.
