Chief Gary Yandura told Channel 2’s Mark Winne that one of his officers came across a driver asleep at the wheel. Officer Tom Lefever woke up the driver, Tyrone Marvail Chapman, and asked for his name. Lefever says Chapman was glassy-eyed and responded with a fake name.

Lefever says Chapman then reached for the gear shift and took off, dragging Lefever along with him.

Lefever said in a report that he could not get his hand out of the car safely so he hung on. As Chapman picked up speed, Lefever says he lifted his legs up and balled up his body.

The chief says Chapman faces a mix of felony and misdemeanor charges.

“No one was hurt except the officer was scraped up a little bit,” Yandura said.
