DEKALB COUNTY, Ga. — A truck overturned on a busy interstate ramp Tuesday closing the ramp for hours and causing major traffic backups.
The truck, which was carrying 40,000 pounds of liquid plastic, was driving on the ramp from on I-285 southbound to I-20 eastbound when it flipped on its side.
Charles Laney was behind the wheel and says he’s lucky it wasn’t worse.
“I’m lucky to be here. I thank God,” Laney said. “First thing I thought about it maybe I rolled over on somebody. I was more concerned about that than anything.”
Laney says the load shifted as he attempted to get onto I-20 on his way to South Carolina.
“I've been driving since I was 18 years old. I’m 63. I ain’t never really had no major wrecks like this,” Laney said.
The liquid plastic he was carrying, which is used to make fishing lures, spilled all over the interstate. Laney says it was about $40,000 worth of material.
Crews put dirt on the road near the spill and spent hours working to get the tractor-trailer upright and tow it away from the scene.
Laney’s only injury is a cut on his head, something he and his wife are thankful for.
“I told her what happened and she said, ‘Charlie, the Lord ain’t through with you yet,’” Laney said.
