DEKALB COUNTY, Ga. — Leroy Ramos, a 47-year-old MARTA bus driver, was killed last week after getting into an argument with three teenagers who refused to pay the $2.50 bus fare.
On Wednesday, MARTA General Manager, CEO Collie Greenwood released a statement where he spoke about the “unprecedented tragedy.”
“It’s not a secret there has been an uptick in violence towards transit operators nationwide, and in fact, an uptick in violence towards people nationwide with once routine interactions often escalating to crimes,” Greenwood said.

Greenwood said MARTA is “devastated” at Ramos’ murder and called it a “senseless tragedy.”
“To the family, witnesses and coworkers, we stand with you in sorrow, in grief and in dedication to a safer future for all,” he said
Two of the teenagers were arrested shortly after the shooting on Jan. 3. The third teenager turned himself in on Monday. Because they are juveniles, their identities have not been released.
