Dog food sold at Georgia Publix stores recalled over salmonella concerns

There is a new recall for dog owners to know about.

Freshpet Inc., announced a voluntary recall for its Select Small Dog Bite Size Beef & Egg Recipe Dog Food (1 LB bags) over salmonella concerns.

The products may have been sold at Publix locations in Georgia, South Carolina and Florida as well as Target locations in Arizona and southern California. The bags have a sell by date 10/30/2021 with UPC code 627975012939 and lot code 1421FBP0101.

Freshpet said that most products were intercepted at distribution warehouses, but some were accidentally shipped to stores from June 7-10.

The company said it has not received any reports of illness, injury, or adverse reaction and no other products are impacted. Owners can request a refund on the company’s website here.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, common symptoms associated with salmonella in humans include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea or bloody diarrhea, abdominal cramping and fever.

Dogs with salmonella infections may be lethargic and have diarrhea or bloody diarrhea, fever, and vomiting, according to the recall notice. Some dogs will have only decreased appetite, fever and abdominal pain. Infected but otherwise healthy dogs can be carriers and infect other animals or humans.

The recall says if a customer’s dog shows symptoms to contact its veterinarian.
