Georgia’s Department of Transportation announced on Thursday it’s awarded a $3.58 million construction contract to a Tucker-based construction company.
The bridge, which was an overpass for GA 86 in Treutlen County is tentatively scheduled to reopen to traffic in the summer of 2022.
According to the DOT will include a full replacement, including old substructure, concrete beams instead of steel beams, raising the highway one foot to accommodate the beams. The agency did not announce an official start date but said the work will take approximately 180 days once it begins.

The bridge was heavily damaged on Thursday morning July 15 when the “dump” trailer hit the GA 86 overpass near Soperton, moving it nearly six feet.
Interstate 16 between Exit 71 and 78 was shut down for several days while crews cleared debris and figured out what to do with the heavily damaged bridge.
They came up with a plan to disassemble it and traffic resumed just a couple of days after the incident.
