DOUGLAS COUNTY, Ga. — Family and friends wiped away tears celebrating a little boy's third birthday Friday as his father sits in jail, charged with his murder.
Investigators said the father killed King Davis three months ago.
Channel 2’s Tyisha Fernandes reported it was an emotional night Friday after loved ones gathered to remember the child on what would have been his third birthday.
Fernandes said party was set up like any other birthday party for a 3-year-old boy, but once everything was set up and loved ones started looking at pictures of the birthday boy, things changed.
“It's his birthday. He's supposed to be here with us,” the boy’s aunt, Geavona Davis said.
Investigators said the boy’s father, Courtney Craig, 23, became enraged after his child called him a bad word in March.
Friday’s gathering was meant to celebrate the boy’s short life.
That's why his aunt brought cupcakes to the party, wrote messages on this board, lit candles and released balloons.
His cousins wore T-shirts that said "Justice for King Davis" on them.
King’s mother and grandparents threw a separate birthday party for him in New Orleans, where they're from.
His aunt said they'll always have a birthday celebration where King took his last breath. They want to honor his memory more each year.
“As the years go by it is going to get bigger, spacewalk, barbecue, it’s going to get bigger,” Davis said.
Craig remains in jail.
