Nearly a dozen fights in one week have high school parents outraged

FULTON COUNTY, Ga. — Nearly a dozen fights at a local high school have many parents fed up.

“These kids, they fight everyday. They don’t have nobody that they are afraid of,” parent LaTonya Young said.

Young’s son is a senior at Langston Hughes High School in Fairburn.

She said a student was sending her son death threats on social media, so she set up an appointment at the school to talk to the principal about it. As she was waiting, a fight broke out right in front of her.

It was just one of 11 fights at the school in just one week, the district said.

“The thing with Langston Hughes High School, they need to get rid of the problems – like permanently get rid of the problems,” Young said.

She and other parents said it’s the same kids fighting all the time. They said the students get suspended, come back to school and fight again.

Channel 2’s Tyisha Fernandes called Fulton County School District officials to find out what they plan to do about the violence.

They said they disciplined everyone involved, they’re bringing in more school resource officers and they’re banning kids from recording these fights.

Officials said they will punish students if they share any fights on social media. They’re also bringing in some experts to have mediation with students before tensions turn into this fighting.

Young thinks leadership needs to change, as well

“They need to get more people in here who are gonna do their jobs -- that’s gonna get a handle on these kids,” Young said. “If the school do their part by administering the correct punishment, then this is something we would not be dealing with on a regular basis.”
