GRAPHIC: Elderly Home Depot employee dies after being pushed down by store robber, police say

HILLSBOROUGH, N.C. — Police in North Carolina are searching for a thief who pushed down an elderly Home Depot employee who later died.

The incident happened on Oct. 18 at a Hillsborough, N.C. location of the Atlanta-based home improvement store.

Surveillance video shows a masked man leaving the store’s garden area and pushing a shopping cart with three pressure washers, according to the Hillsborough Police Department.

The video shows the employee, who hasn’t been identified, attempt to stop the suspect, who simply pushes him over and keeps walking. The elderly employee fell to the ground, appearing to hit his head.

The employee died on Dec. 1 due to complications from his injuries. The North Carolina medical examiner has ruled the death a homicide.

The suspect left the scene in a white four-door Hyundai Sonata with an obscured North Carolina temporary tag. Police are asking for the public’s help to identify the man.

Home Depot was founded in Marietta 44 years ago and the headquarters are in Cobb County.

The store has not released a statement on the employee’s death.
