COBB COUNTY, Ga. — Drivers on parts of Interstate 285 have no clue what the speed limit is. Dozens of electronic speed limit signs are out.
Channel 2's Sophia Choi found about 30 signs that were dark on Channel 2 Action News This Morning.
Over 170 of the electronic signs went up in October at the top end of the perimeter to cut down on secondary accidents. When traffic stops or slows down, the posted speed limit slows as well.
The Georgia Department of Transportation says 14 of them were deactivated on purpose because they're in construction zones. As for the rest, officials say several issues are to blame.
"We're having issues because of something like an electrical storm, they've been hit by a car," says GDOT spokesperson Natalie Dale.
Choi did see crews working on a couple of the signs on Tuesday near the South Cobb Drive exit.
Drivers say without the signs, it's hard to determine the speed limit, especially on the west side of the perimeter where so many of them are not working.
Despite the outage, GDOT says it's no excuse if you get a speeding ticket.
"The system right now does not have multiple consecutive signs out so it should be clear what the speed limit is, however if you're ever in a situation and you're not sure what the speed limit is, the default speed limit on 285 is 65," Dale says.
GDOT says they hope to have all of them working by the end of the week.
