DEKALB COUNTY, Ga. — Police are investigating after a student said two men raped her on the Emory University campus.
Police said the rape took place at the Beta Theta Pi fraternity house on Eagle Row at about 2:30 a.m. Sunday.
Channel 2's Amy Napier Viteri looked into the incident and learned university officials sent out out an electronic alert to students about this alleged rape Monday.
The female student told officials she knew the two male students who raped her.
"It's really scary. That it's so close, but it happens," said one Emory student.
She said she was caught off guard by the alert from the university.
"When I saw that that was a big deal, I think it was shocking for a lot of people," the student said.
In an email the university spokesperson said, "The victim stated that she was acquainted with the alleged perpetrators, both Emory students, before the incident. The incident is currently under investigation by campus officials."
"It makes us more, I guess, fearful of the people we surround ourselves with. Who we think we trust," the student said.
The student is a member of the Alliance for Sexual Assault Prevention on campus. She said she's glad the victim came forward and hopes the university takes the report seriously. Officials said Emory police executed a search warrant Sunday at the house to collect any potential evidence.
The student said she's glad the university let students know about the investigation into what happened.
"We want to be aware and we want to be able to alleviate the situation and fix the situation," she said.
A university spokesperson told Viteri in a statement Emory works proactively to build a safe community and takes all complaints and accusations of sexual misconduct seriously.
