Engaged firefighters seriously injured when fire engine overturns

UPSON COUNTY, Ga. — Two firefighters were seriously injured in an accident where a fire engine overturned.

Firefighters Logan Gordy and Trista Cheeks were ejected from the fire engine during the crash.

The pair are engaged to be married in October and are members of the Rock Hill Volunteer Fire Department.

Gordy is also a full-time jail officer at the Upson County Sheriff’s Office.

According to the sheriff’s office, the fire engine overturned while they were responding to a vehicle accident on Rocky Bottom Road at about 3:40 p.m. on Saturday, July 15, 2023.

Both Gordy and Cheeks were taken by Life Flight to Grady Memorial Hospital.

According to the Taylor County Volunteer Fire Department, Gordy has an inoperable brain bleed and swelling on his brain.

Cheeks underwent surgery Saturday night for a brain bleed.

Both are currently in the Intensive Care Unit at Grady.

According to an update from Gordy’s father that was posted by the Taylor County Volunteer Fire Department, as of Sunday morning, Gordy had not shown any improvement in his condition but his swelling is going down and Cheeks is improving after surgery.

Georgia State Patrol are investigating the accident involving the overturned fire engine.
