Falling utility pole hits, kill SC high school teacher

WAGENER, S.C. — A teacher is dead after a power pole fell during an accident.

The incident happened Wednesday around 12:30 p.m., according to The Augusta Press.

Channel 2′s ABC affiliate WJBF-TV reported that a pedestrian was walking south on Main Street in Wagener, S.C. when a tractor-trailer going northbound hit several overhead power lines, causing a utility pole to fall and hit the pedestrian.

The Aiken County Coroner Darryl M. Ables identified the woman to WJBF as Jeunelle Robinson, 31.

Robinson was taken to Augusta University Medical Center where she died from her injuries.

Wagener-Salley High School posted on its website that Robinson was a second-year social studies teacher.

“Over the past year, she became friends with numerous colleagues and developed meaningful relationships with many of our students. Genuine and sweet to everyone she encountered, her time here at our school and on this earth feels much too short,” Principal Neloms wrote in a message to families and staff.

Due to the proximity of the accident to the school, Wagener-Salley was placed on a soft lockdown.

The Wagener-Salley High School Football Facebook page stated that Friday’s football game would be canceled. The school also included the volleyball game, open house would also not be held.

“Due to the tragic events of today - the game that was going to take place this Friday night has been canceled. Our thoughts and prayers are with the family of the victim of the horrible accident,” the football wrote on Facebook.

To assist in the grieving process, the school said they would have additional counselors on campus to support students, teachers and families.

The South Carolina Highway Patrol along with the coroner’s office is continuing to investigate the accident.
