DEKALB COUNTY, Ga. — The family of a naked man who was shot and killed in March by officers in DeKalb County have filed a wrongful death lawsuit against the officer who killed him.
Channel 2's Dave Huddleston was in downtown Atlanta Wednesday where the family announced their decision to file suit.
The shooting was reported just after 1 p.m. March 9 in an apartment complex on Chamblee Tucker Road.
Anthony Hill, 27, was running around his apartment complex naked and delusional when he was shot by DeKalb County officer Robert Olsen in March, authorities said. Hill was killed.
Olsen initially said he feared for his life, but according to the family's attorney, who filed the lawsuit in federal court, three witnesses said Hill was not threatening Olsen when the officer shot and killed Hill, a military veteran.
"I wouldn't want this to happen to any other person or veteran," Hill's mother Carolyn Baylor Giummo.
A grand jury recommended further investigation into the shooting.
Hill's family told Huddleston that they filed the suit on Veterans Day to make others aware that some veterans need help when they return home.
"I think you need to understand you must always respect them, because they gave their lives and they gave their time and they went into dangerous areas, so when they do come back -- and a lot of them don't come back the way they go -- you need to love them, embrace them and understand them. And take the time to see the situation," Giummo said.
The attorney representing the Hill family, Christopher Chestnut, wants speacialized training for police officers who encounter the mentally ill.
