PAULDING COUNTY, Ga. — A family of seven is left with nothing after a fire destroyed their home

The Hodges family told Channel 2’s Matt Johnson that their house was gone in just a matter of minutes.

Karissa Hodges, the mother, said she and three of her children were home when they started smelling smoke. Now, there’s nothing but a pile of rubble of what used to be their home.

“It's horrible,” Hodges said as she showed Johnson what was left of her Paulding County home Sunday.

She said she barely escaped with three of her children Thursday when smoke turned to flames.

“I opened the garage, called 911 and that's when it really got bad with smoke and flames,” Hodges said.

It was around 3 p.m. when Hodges told Johnson that she noticed smoke coming from the garage.

Within about 15 minutes, she said, the house burned to the ground.

Everything they had burned with the house, including all the new things she bought for her five children for school.

“School supplies were in the house. Brand new clothes, everything was in the house,” Hodges said.

It will be a long road ahead for the Hodges family but Karissa said they have found help for her children along the way.

“The fire chief that came out, his daughter actually went and bought them some stuff,” Hodges said.

With no place to call home for the moment, the Hodges family can only think about the blessings that came with the disaster.

“It's a good thing it happened during the day and not at night because we wouldn’t have noticed,” Hodges told Johnson.

Firefighters told the family they're unsure of the cause of the fire.

For now the family is staying with relatives in the area.

A GoFundMe account has been set up to help the family if you would like to donate.
