Family of man murdered on his birthday in January issues emotional plea for help

DEKALB COUNTY, Ga. — A man was murdered on his birthday, and we have new information that could help solve the crime.

Channel 2 Action News first told you in January the man was found shot to death in the parking lot of this apartment complex off Snapfinger Woods Drive in DeKalb County.

On Thursday night, we've learned his name was Matthew McCullough.

The victim's father, Sam McCullough, is issuing an emotional plea for help.

For the first time Thursday night, DeKalb County police are releasing surveillance video from a nearby Shell gas station on Jan. 19.

The video shows a maroon Tahoe police say was later used as a getaway vehicle. Police believe the people in the Tahoe killed McCullough, who is seen getting out of that same Tahoe.

"The three hours prior to the incident he’s in the parking lot interacting with these people," said  Detective Michael Knight with the DeKalb County Police Department.

Knight says after leaving the gas station around 2:30 in the morning, McCullough got into his own vehicle, met up with someone else to sell video games and ended up getting shot multiple times,

dragged out of his car and robbed.

"I believe in reality that person in vehicle with him called Tahoe over and set it up. They took 8 to 10 Xbox 360 games and his phone and left the scene," Knight said.

For McCullough's family, they’re looking for closure

"You wish you could give him a hug, wish you could talk to him, tell him you love him, tell him you’ll always be there for him. All that’s gone now, so yeah, life has no direction," Sam McCullough said.

Crime Stoppers is offering a $2,000 reward.

Police are looking for three suspects. All are believed to be teenagers.
