ATLANTA — A father of five was killed when gunmen sprayed a local gas station with bullets.
The shooting happened at the Chevron gas station on Campbellton Road in southwest Atlanta and the gunmen are still out there.
Antonio Clements' girlfriend, Kendra, spoke only to Channel 2’s Amy Napier Viteri just moments after she got out of the hospital.
“This nonsense violence in our community needs to stop. It needs to stop,” said Kendra.
Kendra was in the car with Clements at the time he was killed. She says she doesn’t believe he was a target, but, instead, an innocent victim.
Clements' family desperately wants to know who killed the 29-year-old father of five.
“He was a good person. He didn’t bother nobody,” said Kendra.
Kendra says the moments before Clements was shot are still terrifying to think about.
“I don't know. I don't know exactly what happened. Like we don't know these people,” she said.
Kendra says she and Clements were going to the convenience store. They hadn’t even pulled into the lot and someone was shooting at their car.
“It was so scary because I just told him, ‘Baby, come on let's go,’ and he put the car in reverse,” she said.
She says a bullet grazed her head and another hit Clements as they tried to back out.
“I was holding his hand trying to help him put the car in drive,” she said. “It didn't go nowhere. He was gone.”
“He was a sweet person. They didn't have to gun our son down like that,” said Clements' mother, Tomikio Clements. “They really didn't have to kill him.”
Clements parents shared pictures of their son with us. They say he had five children he adored and recently started a mime dance ministry with his brother that performed in local churches.
“I need somebody to come forward and tell me who killed my son,” said Clements' father, Bruce Phillips. “He never did nothing wrong to no one.”
Kendra wonders if they drove into someone else's fight that night and wants the people responsible caught.
“Why would they just shoot at somebody they don't know?” said Kendra. “They don't need to be shooting, period, around here.”
The family is now trying to raise money for Clements' funeral costs. They plan to hold a fish fry on Friday at 1293 Avonwood Circle.
