FBI investigates DeKalb County Jail Taser incidents

DEKALB COUNTY, Ga. — The DeKalb County Sheriff Jeff Mann says his office turned over videos of two controversial taser incidents at the county jail to the FBI.

Mann says during the Jan 12, 2012, incident, a deputy used a taser on an inmate who did not need it. A complaint from an inmate's family brought that Taser incident to the sheriff's attention.

The sheriff says surveillance video of the second Taser incident, on January 27, 2012, proved crucial in an internal investigation that led to the forced resignation of one sergeant, the demotion of four others, and suspension of another.

"We have received a request for information from the FBI in which we provided the case file on this particular incident, and we are cooperating fully with the federal authorities," Mann said.

Channel 2 Action News found at least five people who confirmed they were from the DeKalb County Sheriff's Office at the Russell Federal Building.

All five people said they were there to testify about the 2012 taser incidents.

According to the sheriff's office, the sargeant who allegedly lost his job ordered inmates to stand in water with hands on their heads for a half hour.

Documents from the sheriff's office also say an inmate alleged that same sargeant "went Taser crazy by tasing him repeatedly until he passed out."
