Fort Benning is one of nine Army bases with names commemorating Confederate soldiers that could be renamed later this year. Fort Gordon, also located in Georgia, is also on the list.
U.S. Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin issued a memorandum approving the name changes.
If the name changes receive final approval, Fort Benning is expected to be renamed Fort Moore.
