FLASHBACK: The time Tina Turner performed pre-game show before Super Bowl XXXIV in Atlanta

ATLANTA — The music world is mourning the loss of a legend after Tina Turner died at the age of 83 on Wednesday.

Turner’s spokesperson said the singer had been battling a long illness but died peacefully in her sleep at her Switzerland home.

The “Queen of Rock-N-Roll” played hundreds of concerts throughout her career, including several stops in Atlanta; but perhaps none were more memorable than her pre-game performance before Super Bowl XXXIV.

Turner performed her hits “When the Heartache is Over” and “Proud Mary” in the pre-game tribute called “The Great American Music of the 20th Century.” The Georgia Tech marching band and Marietta-native Travis Travis also played during the show.

Turner rose to fame in the 1960s and would go on to become one of the best-selling artists of all-time with millions of records sold.

She took home eight Grammy Awards from her 25 nominations. In 1986, the Hollywood Walk of Fame gave Turner her own star and five years later, she was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame.

Funeral arrangements have not been announced.
