Former Atlanta judge says police did not investigate home burglary enough

SOUTH FULTON COUNTY, Ga. — A former Fulton County Superior Court judge says police did not do enough to investigate a burglary when an officer first responded to an alarm going off at her southwest Atlanta home.

The security company said that the officer turned around when he encountered a closed front gate, former Judge Thelma Wyatt Cummings Moore said. Moore pointed out that the officer could have walked around the gate up to her home to check the perimeter.

"The post man walks up the hill, FedEx man walks up the hill, the UPS man walks up the hill, and the gate I have is to prevent automobiles from going up the hill, it certainly wasn't designed to keep the police out," Moore said.

Moore said burglars stole tens of thousands of dollars in goods, including jewelry and electronics.

"He could have called for backup and perhaps, even caught them in the act and today. We would have some burglars in jail and they wouldn't be able to burglarize anyone else's home," Moore said.

"Most hurtful was the fact they took my mother's wedding band that my father had given her," Moore said.

Moore said the burglars even brought their dog.

"The dog had left me a little deposit of feces right here," Moore told Channel 2's Rachel Stockman.

Atlanta police are investigating the case.

"We will be certain to follow up with the victim in this case to get a clear understanding of her concerns," said Carlos Campos, the Public Affairs Director for the Atlanta Police Department.
