Man sentenced to life after being convicted of attacking, raping woman being trafficked

FULTON COUNTY, Ga. — Prosecutors in Fulton County say a young woman who was trafficked into sexual servitude is starting to receive justice after a man was convicted of attacking and raping her.

“The greatest thing about the conviction of Torres Drain is it sends a clear message that these are not throwaway people,” District Attorney Fani Willis told Channel 2 Investigative Reporter Mark Winne.

Deputy District Attorney Earnelle Winfrey says Drain cruised an online site to find sex for money in 2018 and negotiated a price with an alleged pimp despite not even having the money in his bank account to pay.

“[He] dragged her to the back of the house, put her in a chokehold, put a gun to her head and raped her,” Winfrey said.

In 911 calls and body camera footage from that night, the then-20-year-old can be heard describing Drain pulling a gun on her, slamming her on the ground and more.

On Monday, he was convicted of rape, trafficking a person for sexual servitude and aggravated assault - strangulation.

Judge Melynee Leftridge sentenced Drain to life in prison plus an additional 30 years.

“I do not know of another time where a ‘john,’ as people like to say, ever got a life sentence but he earned it and now he has it,” Willis said.

Prosecutors say the young woman was being trafficked for sex by John Michael Hakeem Gibson, also known as rapper Cash Out. Gibson was indicted earlier this year on charges of rape, sex trafficking and is accused of luring women into prostitution.

Winfrey says the victim testified at trial that Gibson told her that if she called police to report the attack, she should leave his name out and said she met the attacker at a club.

The prosecutor says the victim has accomplished something too many others in her shoes have found difficult by escaping the bonds of sexual servitude and turning her life around.

“She’s doing very well. She works with the elderly now,” Winfrey described.

Drain was acquitted of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony.

Winne briefly spoke to who he understands is Drain’s attorney who said they plan to appeal.
