GA man arrested after police found more than car damage during hit-and-run

BALDWIN, Ga. — A 47-year-old man is facing several charges after a hit-and-run.

On Dec. 2, just before 1 a.m., Baldwin police and firefighters were called to a hit-and-run with injuries on Duncan Bridge Road, near Georgia Highway 365.

When first responders arrived, they learned the driver of a black car traveling westbound on Duncan Bridge Road saw a Habersham County deputy working a car accident outside the city limits of Baldwin.

Officials said the driver, identified as Christopher Hodge, 47, of Dallas, Ga, made a U-turn, hitting the back of an SUV in the eastbound lane of Duncan Bridge Road. Baldwin police said the SUV spun out of control, leaving the roadway.

A passenger of the SUV complained of injuries. Police said Hodge drove away.

While police were on the way to the crash, dispatch informed officers of a burglary alarm at 365 Self Storage. Baldwin police requested assistance from Alto police. When police arrived at 365 Self Storage, they learned the automatic gate had been hit by a vehicle and pushed inward several feet.

Baldwin police turned the car accident over to Georgia State Patrol and responded to 365 Self Storage. Once officials reviewed the surveillance video, they learned Hodge rammed through the gate and entered the self-storage area, but he never left.

Police said they found Hodge still sitting in the driver’s seat in a vacant unit. Police said damage to the property at 365 Self Storage is believed to be more than $15,000.

While searching Hodge’s car, authorities said they found marijuana, methamphetamine and open alcoholic beverage containers.

Baldwin police arrested and charged Hodge with the following:

  • Burglary (2nd degree)
  • Criminal Damage to Property (2nd Degree)
  • Possession of marijuana
  • Possession of methamphetamine
  • Possession of drug-related objects

GSP is investigating all traffic-related offenses stemming from the car accident.
