Police said that initially, Gonzalez was not armed, but he went inside his home and brought a gun outside. Police said Gonzalez fired one round and they believed he was shooting at them.
Police called for backup and tried to talk Gonzalez. While police were talking to him, he turned toward them and pointed the gun at officers. The officers shot Gonzalez, who later died at the hospital.
Neighbors said it was scary to see their neighborhood surrounded by police.
“I heard like they were arguing, and then, he was just talking nonsense,” neighbor Jullissa Villanueva. “And when I looked out the window, the house was already surrounded by cops. And then I heard a gunshot, just one gunshot.”
Villanueva said that after the gunshot, even more officers arrived in the neighborhood.
“They tried talking with him, to calm him. I was really scared and I was praying that they young man would surrender,” Villanueva said. “And then I heard a couple gunshots at the end.”
