CLAYTON COUNTY, Ga. — The Georgia Bureau of Investigation is investigating a Christmas Day deadly shooting involving the Clayton County Sheriff’s Office.
Channel 2 Action News has learned that the incident happened around Wednesday morning in the 4500 block of Ridge Road.
The City of South Fulton police said the Clayton County Sheriff’s Office chased a wanted suspect in a stolen car into its jurisdiction.
At a dead end, authorities said the car turned around and headed toward the deputies. That’s when they said they opened fire.
The suspect was shot by deputies, the sheriff’s office said. The driver, identified as Deangelo Rashad Martin, 23, of Union City, was taken to Grady Memorial Hospital where he later died.
One deputy was injured after being struck by the suspect’s car. He was taken to the hospital where he was treated and later released.
Rosemary McClendon was out for a Christmas Day walk when she ran into the small army of police in her neighborhood.
“My sister said, ‘I’m going to be afraid to go to sleep and night.’ I said, ‘Well, don’t be, because we don’t know what’s going on,’” McClendon said.
