COBB COUNTY, Ga. — The Georgia Bureau of Investigation is investigating a deadly officer-involved shooting in Cobb County.
Officials say the Cobb County Sheriff’s Office, the Paulding County Sheriff’s Office and the United States Marshal’s South Eastern Regional Fugitive Task Force were serving a warrant at a Powder Springs home when the shooting happened just before 4 p.m. Monday.
Police say the suspect, Michael Wayne Smashey, 37, "made an offensive move towards the officers with a knife." An officer then fired at Smashey, killing him.
NewsChopper 2 was over the scene on W. McEachern Woods Drive, where dozens officers and several police cars filled the street.
Smashey had outstanding warrants in Cobb as well Paulding County for felony charges of armed robbery, aggravated assault, and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon.
