SWAT team shoots, kills man while serving drug warrant in Cobb County

SMYRNA, Ga. — The Georgia Bureau of Investigation is investigating a shooting involving the Cobb County Sheriff’s Office.

Agents were called to investigate the shooting at Concord Chase apartments off Spring Brook Trail and Hurt Road since the sheriff’s office called the GBI.

Channel 2′s Tyisha Fernandes reported the parking lot filled with police vehicles when she arrived at the scene early Thursday.

Investigators say Cobb County deputies were serving a warrant at an apartment on the first floor just before 5 a.m.

A team made up of Marietta Cobb Smyrna Organized Task Force and the Cobb County Sheriff’s Office SWAT team was involved.

A SWAT team member fired his gun and shot and killed someone inside the apartment. It’s not clear why the officer fired his weapon.

The shooting victim was taken to Wellstar Cobb Hospital where he died. He has not been identified. No officers were hurt.

It’s standard for the GBI to investigate any shooting involving a law enforcement officer in Georgia.

Once complete they will hand the case over the Cobb County district attorney.
