Georgia Archives building in rubble after implosion

ATLANTA — More than 500 pounds of explosives brought down the Archives building in downtown Atlanta Sunday morning.

The 55,000-ton building (330 Capitol Avenue SE, Atlanta, Ga. 30334) was imploded at 7 a.m. It fell at a 45-degree angle.

Surface and secondary roads were closed from 6 a.m. to 7:30 a.m. Interstate roads were closed from 6:50 a.m. to 7:30 a.m.

Below is a schedule of events that took place Sunday morning.

  • 6:30 a.m. -- Media and attendees arrive on location
  • 6:45 a.m. – Gov. Nathan Deal arrives
  • 6:45 a.m. -- First horn signals 15-minute alert
  • 6:55 a.m. -- Second horn signals 5-minute alert
  • 6:55 a.m. -- Deal gives remarks at podium; introduces Devin Simmons and family
  • 6:58 a.m. -- Deal invites Devin and family to join him for the countdown
  • 6:59 a.m. -- Third horn signals 1-minute alert
  • 6:59 a.m. -- 10-second countdown begins; Devin "pulls the plunger" to cue implosion
  • 7:00 a.m. -- Implosion

The site will eventually be the new state judicial center.
