Georgia drivers 60 and over who need to renew their driver’s licenses will get a little extra time to do so.
The Georgia Department of Driver Services granted senior drivers a 120-day extension in response to the coronavirus. People who are 60 and older are classified by health officials as higher risk groups.
This applies to driver’s licenses or identification cards that are set to expire March through June 30, 2020. The department estimates more than 36,000 Georgians are eligible for the extension.
“DDS is taking every precaution to keep our customers and team members safe. However, if you do not have to visit in person, please do not come. Many services can be done from the comfort of your home or office via the DDS website or the free mobile app, DDS 2 Go,” commented Commissioner Spencer R. Moore.
Eligible Georgians will receive a notification alerting them to watch for a special card to arrive in the mail.
The DDS encourages people to check its website at dds.georgia.gov or https://dds.georgia.gov/your-georgia-drivers-license/online-services before visiting in person.
“Commissioner Moore and his team are actively searching for ways to provide more services away from the centers to mitigate public health concerns, and I applaud them for identifying this solution for these citizens,” said Gov. Brian Kemp in a statement.
