The tax suspension saves Georgians about 30 cents per gallon for gas and 33 cents per gallon for diesel.

According to AAA, the average price per gallon in Georgia is $4.35, which is below the national average of $4.84.

Kemp, who is running for re-election against Democratic nominee Stacey Abrams, released the following statement after signing the order.

“I am committed to fighting to ease the economic burden hardworking Georgians are facing due to disastrous policies from Washington politicians. In March, I took decisive action to help those impacted by high prices at the pump. Unfortunately, President Biden and Democratic leaders have not done their part to tackle this issue, instead calling on Americans facing record-high inflation to live more frugally,” Kemp said. “To provide actual relief to Georgians, I am once again extending the supply chain state of emergency and suspending our state motor fuel tax. In addition to these actions, I am suspending the locomotive fuel tax to help fight rising costs that are being passed on to consumers.”

Abrams’ campaign meanwhile announced Friday it will launch new ads at thousands of Georgia gas stations, calling on Kemp to extend the gas tax suspension through the end of the year.

“Stacey Abrams understands the struggles working families are facing in Georgia while Brian Kemp refuses to provide them with the stability they need by extending the gas tax suspension until the end of 2022,” said Lauren Groh-Wargo, campaign manager for the Abrams campaign.
