GWINNETT COUNTY, Ga — Update: Channel 2's Tony Thomas confirms the person of interest in the murder has turned himself in to police.
-----------
Georgia Gwinnett College was locked down and later closed Monday afternoon after a violent crime near the campus.
The school tweeted that the crime required campus police to put the campus on lockdown Monday morning.
“I heard people screaming in my building, then they ran into classrooms,” student Shane Reibel said. “We were sitting in the corner, lights off.”
According to police, victim Vanessa Soyer was shot to death in front of her child at an apartment complex on Windy Hill Point.
Police identified the woman’s husband, Sheldon Soyer, 43, as a person of interest in connection with the shooting. He is wanted for questioning, police said.
Lawrenceville police and district attorney investigators fanned out across the area looking for Sheldon Soyer. They sent a K-9 officer into one apartment, but found nothing.
Neighbors said they heard the gunshots.
One witness told Channel 2’s Tony Thomas that she spoke to the victim’s 12-year-old son moments after the shooting.
“(He said) ‘Ms. Fatimah, he did it in front of me!'” Fatimah Howard said.
Police said they did not order the school to be on lockdown, but said the college activated the procedure out of an abundance of caution.
Georgia Gwinnett Police cleared buildings on campus one by one, letting people leave. The campus will remain closed Monday night.
