Hamond tested positive three days into pre-planning and new teacher induction. However, school officials said he was never able to start the school year with students in the classroom.
Hammond joined the school’s coaching staff for their football team, the Tigers, this summer. School officials said he left an “indelible mark” on the other coaches and players.
“Our thoughts and prayers go out to all of Coach Hammond’s family and friends as we all grieve the loss of an extraordinary individual,” Dalton Public Schools said in a statement to WSB-TV.
School counselors and social workers at Hammond Creek Middle School were there this morning to provide any assistance needed to students and staff.
The school also confirmed that Hammond’s wife is currently hospitalized with COVID-19.
