The GBI said they were called in to investigate an excessive force complaint on Wednesday. Lawrence was accused of using excessive force against a woman in custody at the Eatonton Police Department.
The GBI said a 58-year-old woman was arrested by an officer on Dec. 8 for driving under the influence. An officer took her to the jail for processing.
“While at the Eatonton Police Department, Chief Kent Lawrence used excessive force against the female, who was handcuffed at the time,” GBI investigators said.
Lawrence was arrested and taken to the Putnam County Sheriff’s Office.
