Georgia Red Cross helping support those in need in Ian’s aftermath

MACON, Ga. — Hurricane relief volunteers with the American Red Cross Georgia are getting in place in middle and coastal Georgia.

“We have electronic means to look at homes and decide the level of damage they have, and we can drop that information into an app,” said Red Cross Southwest Georgia Executive Director Adelaide Kirk.

Thursday, Channel 2 Action News was the only news station allowed inside the Red Cross command center in Macon.

Workers at the center organized deployment schedules for volunteers.

“We have shelter teams in place along the coast in several locations,” Kirk said.

“My first experience was about 22 years ago,” explained Susan Everitt, a government liaison with the Red Cross.

She told Channel 2′s Audrey Washington that Hurricane Floyd destroyed her home in 1999, and that’s why she feels the need to help.

“Make sure that we have correct and concise communication,” said Everitt.

Red Cross officials said volunteers are now ready to spend days or even weeks in parts of Florida, coastal Georgia and South Carolina.

“Our first priority is mass care. So for folks who don’t feel safe in their homes, or over the course of the next 24 hours might incur flooding,” said Kirk.
