SCARBOROUGH, Me. — A woman visiting Maine is dead after falling from a cliff, according to a news release from the Scarborough Police Department.

Romona Gowens, 54, was leaning against a fence when the fence broke, police say.
Gowens fell about 30-feet. She suffered critical injuries. The effort to reach her and get her out was challenging. Emergency workers took Gowens to the hospital where she later died, according to the news release.

The fall happened one day before her 55th birthday, according to police.
